Meet Your Hosts

Farmer Joel Salatin

Joel Salatin and his family own Polyface Farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The farm produces salad bar beef, pastured poultry, pigaerator pork, pastured lamb, duck, and rabbit as well as lumber and maple syrup.

Since acquiring the property in 1961, the family has used compost instead of chemicals, pasture insead of factory houses, and direct marketing instead of industrial-scale wholesalers. Author  of 15 books spanning themes from how-to to cultural and social issues, he is editor of The Stockman Grass Farmer, the world’s leading pastured livestock trade journal.

Featured in countless media outlets, including Michael Pollans’ Omnivore’s Dilemma and the award-winning documentary Food Inc., he is known as the most famous farmer in the world. His own monicker is Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer.

The farm sells locally and ships meat and poultry to all 48 contiguous states. The on-site Lunatic Learning Center is a gathering hub for organizations desiring on-farm food-memorable shindigs. A formal apprenticeship program germinates young farmers.

A sought after conference speaker, he travels the world encouraging farmers in biological and profitable systems and inspiring food buyers to purchase intentionally, “healing the land one bite at a time.”

He and his wife Teresa have two children and three grandchildren.
